Buying decision
eufy camera review: choose by power, coverage, and recording mode
Short answer: choose the S220 for a small porch or side entrance and event clips; the S340 for an open yard where pan-and-tilt coverage matters; the S330/eufyCam 3 for a 4K multi-camera HomeBase setup; and the S4 when direct power and 24/7 recording are the priority. If you cannot provide the required power, network path, or recording mode, the resolution number will not rescue the purchase.
Pick: SoloCam S220. It is the simplest fit for motion events around a porch, patio, or side door. It is not a continuous archive.
Pick: SoloCam S340. Its wide and telephoto lenses give you a better chance of covering a moving subject without buying multiple fixed views.
Pick: eufyCam S330 (eufyCam 3). Choose it for a centralized 4K/HomeBase system and event-based recording, not for 24/7 capture.
Pick: eufyCam S4 when direct power is available. Its split view is the useful feature: one view can keep the scene while the other follows movement.
Important limit: this is a decision guide built from the dated official-spec snapshot linked below, not a claim that one model wins every installation. Sunlight, walls, network layout, motion volume, and the way you intend to review footage can change the result.
Run this pre-purchase check before comparing prices
- Circle the power path. Is the mounting position exposed to useful direct sun, or can you run a permanent cable? If neither answer is yes, remove solar and continuous-recording assumptions from the comparison.
- Write down the recording job. “Tell me when something moves” means event clips. “Let me review everything from 2:00 to 2:15” means continuous recording, which narrows the model and power choices.
- Mark the view that must never move away. A tracking camera can be excellent at following a person and still be the wrong camera for a gate that must remain framed. Use a fixed view or the S4 split-view design for that job.
- Locate the storage path. Decide whether clips stay on the camera, on HomeBase, or in an optional cloud layer. “No mandatory monthly fee” does not mean “no cloud option” and does not mean every model stores footage the same way.
- Check the network before drilling. For a HomeBase model, identify the router/Ethernet position and the route to the farthest camera. For a direct-Wi-Fi model, check the actual mounting spot, not just the room where the router sits.
- Reserve an export path. If a clip matters, export it before changing a camera between direct Wi-Fi and HomeBase modes or before replacing hardware. A purchase plan should include how important footage leaves the system.
The decision is really four questions
| Question | If the answer is yes | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|
| Do I need a clip for every moment? | Start with direct power and a model that supports continuous recording. | Confirm the model's recording mode; battery and solar event cameras are not a substitute. |
| Does one scene need to stay framed? | Prefer a fixed lens or a split-view design. | Do not assume pan-and-tilt tracking will protect the original view while it follows movement. |
| Will several cameras share one base? | Plan the HomeBase location, Ethernet connection, storage capacity, and compatibility first. | Check the exact model and base combination; “Eufy camera” is not one connection path. |
| Is the camera hard to reach? | Solar and battery maintenance become part of the mounting decision. | Measure shade, winter sun angle, motion volume, and how you will recover from a low battery. |
What the four-model snapshot actually says
The SoloCam S220 is a 2K, 135-degree event camera with an integrated 0.9W solar panel, 8GB of local storage, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and no continuous recording. That makes it a reasonable small-area choice when the question is “did someone arrive?” rather than “what happened during the whole afternoon?” (official S220 specifications)
The SoloCam S340 combines a 3K wide lens and a 2K telephoto lens with hybrid zoom and pan-and-tilt coverage. It is the more interesting choice for an open yard, but it still needs the correct power and recording expectations; a moving camera is not the same as two fixed cameras. (official S340 product page)
The eufyCam S330/eufyCam 3 is the centralized option in this snapshot: 4K video, HomeBase storage, and a multi-camera path. It is designed around event recording, so do not buy it as a battery-powered way to create a complete 24/7 archive. (official S330 product page)
The eufyCam S4 is the outlier when recording mode matters more than a fully wire-free installation. Its 4K wide view and dual-2K tracking view are useful when a driveway or gate must remain visible, but the 24/7 mode requires direct power. (official S4 product page)
Three reasons a good-looking comparison can still fail
- Resolution is not coverage. A sharp image pointed at the wrong angle is still the wrong evidence. Start with the object and distance you need to see.
- Solar is not a guarantee. A panel can extend runtime, but shade, winter sun, clip length, motion volume, and placement determine whether the battery stays healthy in a particular installation.
- Local storage is not one thing. On-camera storage, HomeBase storage, optional cloud backup, and exported clips are different paths. Decide which one you will actually use before buying.
