Camera setup and household routines
Does eufy geofencing automatically arm cameras?
Yes, on supported eufySecurity setups, geofencing can switch the selected security mode based on participating phones: the system can switch to a chosen Home mode when at least one enabled household phone is inside the saved area, and to Away when all enabled phones are outside. It depends on each phone’s location permission, the selected devices and mode actions, and the exact camera system. eufy says a switch can lag from about 20 seconds to 6 minutes, so verify the status in the app before relying on it.
Scope: This is a setup-planning guide based on eufy’s published geofencing instructions, not a test of every camera, phone, region, or app version.
What the location rule means for a household
Geofencing is a mode-switch trigger, not a motion detector and not proof that every camera is recording. The Home and Away modes decide what each included device does. A mode may control recording, notifications, or alarms differently by device; review the actions saved under the selected mode instead of assuming that “Home” means cameras stop recording or “Away” means every feature is enabled.
| Phone situation | Expected location decision | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| At least one enabled phone is home | Geofencing is intended to select the configured Home mode. | Check which cameras and actions that Home mode includes. |
| All enabled phones are away | Geofencing is intended to select the configured Away mode. | Confirm the Away mode’s recording, alerts, and alarm actions for each relevant device. |
| A phone is not enabled or cannot report location | It may not contribute to the household’s location decision. | Review the enabled-phone list and that phone’s app location permissions. |
| Mode changes late or appears wrong | Phone location accuracy and background behavior can delay or affect the transition. | Check the app’s current security mode and test one phone at a time. |
Set it up without assuming every model supports it
- Check eligibility first. Open the security or geofencing controls for the exact device and app account. eufy’s support instructions list eligible devices rather than promising that every camera supports geofencing. If the control is absent, check the model’s current support page.
- Choose the modes and devices. In the app’s Security area, select the device or system, choose the mode for when the household is away and when someone is home, then select which devices should follow the location rule. App menus can change by release.
- Review every participating phone. eufy says each household member needs the eufySecurity app and real-time location access for the feature. Only phones enabled in the geofence setup should count in the household rule. A shared camera invitation alone does not establish that a phone is enrolled.
- Allow background location as required by the phone. eufy’s guide calls for background location permission and recommends leaving Wi-Fi and location enabled. Battery-saving settings or force-closing the app may interfere. Use the phone’s current permission controls and explain the location sharing to household members before enrolling their phones.
Run a small, reversible check
Before trusting automatic switching for a trip, test the setup while someone can see the app status. Keep the existing manual mode controls available as a fallback.
| Check | Record | If it does not match |
|---|---|---|
| One enabled phone enters the saved area | Phone location permission, time, and mode shown in the eufy app | Wait for the documented delay, then verify app and phone permissions. |
| One enabled phone leaves while another remains | Which phones are enabled and whether the mode changes | Check the full enabled-phone list; one phone remaining may keep the household at Home. |
| The last enabled phone leaves | Mode status and the actions assigned to Away | Confirm this device is enrolled and has background location access; use manual mode while diagnosing. |
| Return home | Whether Home mode returns and what it does on each camera | Review mode assignments and device-specific recording/notification settings. |
Do not use a successful mode change as evidence that an event was recorded. For an important camera, separately check its mode actions and a fresh event in the timeline. Our missed-motion guide separates detection, recording, and notifications; the family-sharing guide covers invited-user access.
