Motion detection troubleshooting
Why is my eufy camera missing motion?
Short answer: check that the camera is set to detect the kind of movement you care about, then run its Motion Test at the spot where events are missed. If the test does not detect a person crossing the scene, adjust sensitivity or camera position; if it detects the movement but does not save or alert, check the activity zone and the selected security mode’s recording and notification actions. Menu names and detection behavior vary by model.
Check distance, sensitivity, mounting height, angle, and the direction of travel.
Check the activity zone, recording schedule, and Video Record action for the active security mode.
Check Push Notification in that same mode and the camera’s notification settings.
Check Detection Type. Human Only can filter non-human movement, with model-dependent night behavior.
Keep one baseline: write down the device model, time of day, detection type, sensitivity, test result, whether a clip was saved, and whether a notification arrived. Change one setting or placement variable at a time; otherwise a successful repeat will not tell you what fixed the miss.
Trace the miss from sensor to phone
- Choose the right target type. If a person triggers events but a car or animal does not, inspect Detection Type before raising sensitivity. Eufy’s general support guidance says Human Only filters non-human movement during the day on applicable models; some models switch to All Motions at night. All Motions can also increase unwanted events and battery use on battery devices. Verify how your exact model behaves.
- Run Motion Test at the missed path. In the device’s Motion Detection settings, use Motion Test Mode if available. Walk across the view at the distance and direction that usually fails. If the camera does not register the pass, adjust sensitivity a small step and repeat. A test that succeeds shows detection at that moment; it does not prove every future event will be recorded.
- Check the approach angle and mounting. Battery cameras that rely on PIR sensing are generally more responsive to movement crossing the view than to someone walking straight toward the lens. For eufyCam guidance, eufy recommends roughly 2–3 m mounting height and no more than a 30° downward angle; another missing-event article recommends 2–2.5 m and no more than 25°. These are model-specific recommendations, not universal installation limits. Follow the guide for your model and avoid assuming a distance figure applies across the product line.
- Inspect the activity zone edges. Confirm the missed path remains inside the zone from first entry through the point where you expect detection. A zone can intentionally ignore movement outside its boundary. For how motion filtering differs from visual masking, see activity zones vs. privacy zones.
- Separate recording from notification. If the test detects motion, but the event is absent from the timeline, open the currently selected Home/Away or other security mode and verify Video Record is enabled. If a clip exists without a phone alert, verify Push Notification separately. These actions can be configured independently.
A short repeatable check
| Pass | Keep constant | Record the result |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline walk | Model, route, time window, current settings | Motion Test signal; clip saved; alert received |
| One sensitivity step | Same route and target type | Did test range change? Did unrelated alerts increase? |
| One placement change | Same settings and route | Did a cross-frame approach register more consistently? |
| Mode check | Same camera position | Video Record and Push Notification states for selected mode |
This is a troubleshooting procedure, not a controlled reliability test. A few passes can isolate a setting or coverage issue, but they cannot establish a camera’s general detection rate.
When to stop changing sensitivity
Higher sensitivity may increase false alerts, while All Motions can capture more than people on supported models. If the Motion Test responds at the target path but clips still start late or end early, investigate recording length and retrigger behavior in the short-clip guide. If detection remains absent after checking the target type, zone, and model-specific placement guidance, note the model, firmware/app version, and test result before contacting eufy support.
