Camera setup and privacy

eufy activity zones vs. privacy zones: what each one does

Short answer: an activity zone tells a compatible camera where to look for motion; a privacy zone is intended to mask part of the image. Use an activity zone to reduce alerts from a sidewalk while keeping your doorway monitored. Use a privacy zone when part of the frame should be obscured. Their behavior and availability vary by model, so verify the saved view and a recorded clip before relying on either setting.

Too many alerts from the road

Try: an activity zone around the entrance you need to monitor. Areas outside it may be ignored for motion events.

A neighbor's window is in frame

Check: whether your exact camera supports a privacy zone and what the feature masks in live view and saved video.

Alerts continue after setup

Review: the zone boundary, camera framing, and any presets. A zone drawn too narrowly can also miss relevant motion.

You need dependable evidence

Verify: with a harmless walk-through at the edge and center of the area. Confirm both the alert and saved clip.

Keep the distinction clear: an activity zone is a motion-filtering choice, not an image blackout. A privacy zone is a visual masking feature on supported devices, but eufy's current support guidance cautions that activity within a privacy zone may not be completely prevented from being recorded. Do not treat either setting as a legal or absolute privacy guarantee.

What changes when you draw each zone

SettingMain jobWhat to check
Activity zoneLimit motion detection, notifications, or event recording to selected parts of the camera view, depending on device behavior.Does the whole entrance, approach path, and expected movement fit inside the saved boundary?
Privacy zoneMask a selected image area on devices that offer the feature.Does the mask appear in live view and in a newly recorded clip? Is the feature available on this model?
Camera angleSets the scene both zones operate on.Will a pan/tilt camera move away from the protected view, or do zones depend on a saved preset?

eufy's setup instructions describe activity zones as areas where the camera should detect motion; they also warn that incomplete zones can cause missed motion. Separate eufy guidance describes privacy zones as masked areas, while noting that privacy-zone activity may not be completely avoided in recordings. Menu names, shapes, limits, and behavior can differ across product generations. Check your model's current app and support page before assuming the same controls apply.

A practical zone plan for a shared boundary

  1. Frame the necessary scene first. Aim for your own entrance or property area. Avoid including more of a public path or a neighbor's space than you need.
  2. Separate “ignore motion” from “hide image.” Draw an activity zone for the movement you want alerts about. If a supported privacy zone is appropriate, use it for the portion that should be masked. One setting does not substitute for the other.
  3. Leave room at the edges. People enter from the side and can be partly outside the frame. Avoid tracing only the door itself if the approach path matters.
  4. Check presets on a moving camera. On models with pan/tilt or tracked positions, verify how zones relate to each saved view and whether the camera returns to the view you expect.
  5. Test a normal event. Walk through the near edge, center, and far edge. Confirm whether the camera sends an alert, records a clip, and masks the intended area. Adjust one boundary at a time.
  6. Recheck after changing the mount. Even a small camera rotation changes where the on-screen shape lands in the real scene. Repeat the test after repositioning, firmware changes, or rebuilding settings.

Enter the monitored pathRelevant motion should be detected under your chosen settings.Alert received? Clip saved?
Move just outside the activity boundaryThis helps reveal whether the boundary is filtering an area you meant to monitor.Did it alert or record? Should the zone extend?
Inspect the privacy-masked areaCheck the actual live image and a fresh saved clip for the expected mask. Was the intended area obscured in both?
Trigger a tracked/preset viewCheck whether the camera's movement changes the area being monitored.Which view was active when the clip was made?

If a boundary remains ambiguous, tighten the camera framing or reposition it so the important scene is easier to separate. Do not assume a software mask will satisfy local rules for surveillance or recording; check the requirements that apply where you live.
