Storage and subscriptions

Do eufy cameras need a subscription? Storage paths explained

Short answer: no, basic recording does not automatically require a monthly subscription. The important question is where your model saves clips: on the camera, on a HomeBase hub, or in an optional cloud backup. That choice affects capacity, remote recovery, and whether a camera can record continuously. A subscription cannot turn a battery event camera into a 24/7 archive.

One small area

Use: on-device storage when the camera supports it. This keeps the setup simple, but capacity and recovery depend on the camera itself.

Several cameras

Use: HomeBase when the exact camera/base combination is supported. A central hub is easier to plan for expansion than separate camera storage.

Off-site copy

Consider: optional cloud backup if you need footage to survive damage or loss of the camera and hub. Confirm the plan, region, and model first.

Every-minute archive

Start with: recording-mode and power requirements. Storage is secondary if the camera only supports motion clips or cannot stay powered.

The buying rule: decide the footage you must be able to retrieve, then choose the storage path. “No monthly fee” describes a cost path; it does not promise unlimited capacity, continuous recording, or an off-site backup.

Four terms that are easy to mix up

  1. On-device storage means clips remain in the camera's built-in memory or supported card. It can be a sensible fit for a single entrance, but it makes the camera itself part of the evidence chain.
  2. HomeBase storage means compatible cameras send footage to a central eufy hub. The hub can make multi-camera storage and expansion easier, but it adds a base location, network path, and compatibility check.
  3. Cloud backup is a separate copy stored with an online service. It may add a recurring cost and its availability can depend on the model, country, and plan. Treat it as an optional resilience layer, not as the definition of eufy recording.
  4. Exported footage is a clip you deliberately save elsewhere. It is the only path in this list that answers the practical question, “How do I keep this clip if I replace, reset, or lose the camera?”

What the current four-model snapshot means in practice

Model Storage path in the snapshot What not to assume Best starting question
SoloCam S220 8GB local storage; direct 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. It is not a continuous-recording archive. Will event clips from one small area be enough?
SoloCam S340 Local camera storage or HomeBase 3 path, depending on setup. Pan-and-tilt coverage does not equal two independent archives. Do I need a moving view, or a fixed view that never leaves the gate?
eufyCam S330 / eufyCam 3 HomeBase 3 with 16GB included and expansion up to 16TB in the cited product snapshot. Centralized storage does not make event-based recording continuous. Do several cameras justify a hub and a shared storage plan?
eufyCam S4 HomeBase S380 path in the snapshot, with storage expansion described on the official product page. 24/7 recording still depends on direct power. Is the recording mode worth running a permanent cable?

These are storage and recording distinctions, not a ranking. The four-model eufy camera review has the dated comparison table and official product links. Product pages and storage plans can change, so verify the exact model and region immediately before purchase.

Use this pre-purchase storage worksheet

  1. Write the retrieval sentence. For example: “I need to find a person at the side gate after an alert,” or “I need to review the complete driveway from 2:00 to 2:15.” The first is compatible with event clips; the second may require a different model and power plan.
  2. Choose the failure you are planning for. If the risk is a full hub or camera being stolen, local storage alone is not a backup. If the risk is an internet outage, cloud access may not be the immediate answer either; identify what remains available locally.
  3. Measure the camera's reachability. A camera mounted high or far away needs a recovery plan for resets, exports, and battery checks. Storage capacity is not useful if you cannot retrieve an important clip before it is overwritten.
  4. Confirm the compatibility chain. Check the exact camera, HomeBase generation, storage expansion, recording mode, and app workflow. Do not infer compatibility from the word “eufy” alone.
  5. Test an export before relying on the system. Save one ordinary event clip and one important clip to a separate location. This exposes permissions, timestamps, and the real steps you will need later.

When paying for cloud backup can make sense

Cloud backup is most defensible when the footage needs to survive a local incident: theft, flood, fire, or damage to the room containing the camera and hub. It can also reduce the friction of retrieving a clip away from home. Those benefits are about redundancy and access, not about improving the camera's lens or detection accuracy.

It is less convincing as a remedy for the wrong hardware. A cloud plan does not fix a weak Wi-Fi route, add a missing continuous-recording mode, provide sunlight to a depleted battery, or guarantee that a moving camera kept the view you needed. Solve those constraints before adding a recurring service.
