Recording modes and retention
Can eufy cameras record 24/7?
Sometimes, but the logo does not tell you the recording mode. Many battery-powered eufyCam and SoloCam models are designed for event clips and do not provide continuous recording. Some wired Indoor Cam and Garage-Control Cam models support it with compatible local storage. Eufy says the eufyCam S4's 24/7 mode requires direct power. Check the exact model and its storage instructions before buying; adding HomeBase or a subscription does not by itself add a missing recording mode.
Expect event recording unless the official page for the exact model says otherwise. Solar charging does not mean the camera records continuously.
Look for an explicit continuous-recording option and the required microSD or NAS path.
Eufy's product information conditions 24/7 recording on direct power; confirm the exact configuration and storage route.
Estimate retention and decide how you will export important footage before the storage loop overwrites it.
Use this rule: verify four independent items—recording mode, required power, compatible storage, and retention behavior. “Local storage” only answers where supported footage goes; it does not mean every minute is captured.
Check the whole recording chain
| Check | Question to answer | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Exact camera | What is the full model name and model number? | Battery eufyCam, SoloCam, indoor, garage, floodlight, and PoE products do not share one recording feature set. |
| Recording mode | Does the official model support continuous recording, scheduled recording, or event clips only? | A motion timeline is not a frame-by-frame archive. A hub or larger card cannot enable an unsupported mode. |
| Power | Does continuous mode require a wired adapter, direct power, or another specified connection? | Battery and solar-assisted cameras may prioritize event capture to preserve charge. Solar input does not establish 24/7 capability. |
| Storage | Which card, HomeBase, or NAS is supported, and what setup is required? | Storage compatibility and capacity vary. Some models need a card inserted or a separate recorder configured before continuous mode appears. |
| Retention | How many hours or days remain before footage is overwritten at your chosen quality? | Continuous video consumes storage faster than selected motion clips. An archive that loops quickly may not meet your review window. |
Common model traps
- HomeBase is not a mode upgrade. Eufy explicitly says the battery-powered S220 SoloCam does not gain 24/7 recording even when connected to HomeBase 3.
- “Indoor Cam” still needs an exact model check. Eufy's continuous-recording instructions describe supported Indoor Cam setups using a formatted microSD card or NAS. Follow the directions for the camera model you own; do not apply a generic Indoor Cam guide to every product.
- Continuous recording creates a retention question. Eufy's guide for a particular 3K continuous-recording setup lists approximate maximum durations by card size and quality. Those figures are tied to that guide and its settings, not a universal estimate for every camera.
- Recording and backup are separate. Continuous local footage can still be lost with the device or storage. Export or separately back up clips you need to preserve.
Pre-purchase worksheet
| Requirement | Fill this in before ordering | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage window | Which location and hours need a complete timeline? | If you only need alerts and short event clips, continuous recording may be unnecessary. |
| Power route | Can a safe, permanent power connection reach the mounting point? | If not, shortlist only models whose supported event mode meets the requirement. |
| Storage path | Card, HomeBase, NAS, or NVR; supported capacity; setup owner | Confirm every component's compatibility rather than assuming products in one brand work together. |
| Review horizon | How many days must remain available if nobody checks the app? | Compare this horizon with the model's official retention estimate and planned recording quality. |
| Preservation | Who exports an important clip and where is the second copy? | Use a separate copy for evidence you cannot afford to lose to overwrite, reset, or device damage. |
Verify a configured camera safely
- Record the camera model, firmware shown in the app, power source, storage device, and selected quality.
- Open the model-specific recording settings. Confirm that a continuous or scheduled mode is available and enabled; capture the visible schedule.
- Leave the camera in its normal protected state. Later, review the playback timeline across a quiet interval and confirm whether it contains continuous footage or only detected events.
- Check the oldest available footage and the app's storage-management controls to understand the actual overwrite window. Export a sample clip using the vendor's normal workflow.
- Recheck after changing storage, power, recording quality, or firmware. A change in one can alter the available mode or retention.
This verifies one installed setup; it is not a reliability test or a guarantee that footage will survive a device or power failure. Do not interrupt a camera protecting an occupied location just to test it.
For model trade-offs across the current comparison set, see the eufy camera review. For storage choices and copies, read the storage and subscription guide. If the real issue is clips starting late or ending early, use the short-clip troubleshooting guide.
